Sri Lanka's main opposition , United National Party declared today that it has decided to support the retired military commander General Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate at the upcoming presidential polls to contest against incumbent,
President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Addressing a special media briefing today the opposition and UNP party leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe said the party took a historic decision at a working committee meeting this morning to support General Fonseka to unite the people against the current president and his 'royal family'. Ending weeks of speculation the opposition leader said it is the best way to defeat the powers of the 'royal family' and urged the party membership to support the committee's decision. General Sarath Fonseka who retired from his post as the Chief of Defense Staff recently is yet to announce his decision. Political analysts say the opposition leader and his party are showing the sign of weakness by not contesting the presidential polls and instead going behind General Fonseka whose military strategies were ridiculed by the UNP during the war.
